John A. Kornfeld
John A. Kornfeld has been repeatedly recognized by his peers, and has been named for many years a New York Super Lawyer and as one of the Top Attorneys in the Metropolitan Area.
John is best known for his trial skills, his intellectually exacting approach to the law and the facts, and his ability to handle complex financial matters. He has been practicing matrimonial law exclusively for more than ten years, has tried to conclusion numerous matters before the Justices of the matrimonial part including financial cases and custody cases, and has briefed and argued numerous appeals to the Appellate Division, First and Second Departments. Before choosing to focus on matrimonial law in 2004, John had more than fifteen years of experience litigating and trying complex commercial cases, defending white collar criminal prosecutions, and representing persons and institutions in regulatory actions brought by the SEC and other governmental agencies.
John has lectured on both substantive and procedural matters to the Matrimonial Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, has been elected as a Delegate from the New York State Bar Association’s Family Law Section, and currently sits on that Section’s Ethics Committee. John also sits on the faculty of the New York College of Matrimonial Trial Attorneys, where he has lectured and trained attorneys in trial techniques. John has been selected by the Court and his peers to sit as a Special Master supervising complex discovery disputes.
Among his other professional accomplishments, John has worked on teams that have: upheld a prenuptial agreement protecting the assets of a “Forbes 100″ client; obtained the largest equitable distribution award granted after trial in the history of New York State; successfully defended appeals that sought to disqualify a law guardian and vacate an award of attorneys’ fees; obtained and sustained on appeal a contempt finding that required the adverse party to serve prison time; and won multi-million dollar awards either by jury verdict or on summary judgment.
John Kornfeld is a graduate of Columbia College (B.A. 1984 comparative literature, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and the Yale Law School (J.D. 1987).
John lives in Westchester County with his wife, Julie, and their three children.
